Adam Smith (5. juni 1723 - 1790) var en britisk/skotsk økonom. Han kaldes også for liberalismens fader.
Adam Smith blev født i Kirkcaldy, Skotland. Han studerede på universiteterne i Glasgow og Oxford. I 1751 blev han professor ved Glasgow universitet, hvor han underviste i problemer med moralsk filosofi. I sin mest kendte bog Wealth of Nations (1776) angreb han det engelske handelssystem, som satte grænser for den frie handel. Adam Smith påstod, at de frie markedskræfter var selvregulerende, idet enhver, som handlede i strid med markedets interesser og ønsker, blev økonomisk straffet. Han var følgelig fortaler for et kapitalistisk system med fri konkurrence. Adam Smith døde i 1790.
